Storia del termine "ingegneria"

L'ingegneria è la disciplina e la professione che ha come obiettivo l'applicazione di conoscenze e risultati delle scienze matematiche fisiche e naturali alla risoluzione di problemi che concorrono alla soddisfazione dei bisogni umani nella società. L'ingegneria, applicando le norme tecniche, fornisce metodologie, progetti e specifiche per la progettazione, realizzazione e gestione di un bene fisico, di un prodotto o di un servizio più o meno complesso, e più in generale per lo sviluppo e il controllo di un processo industriale attraverso opportuno sistema. In questo senso l'ingegneria è una scienza applicata strettamente legata alla tecnica. La parola deriva dal latino ingenium, la stessa radice della parola moderna ingegno. Nel significato originario, per ingegnere veniva inteso un uomo intelligente, pratico, capace di risolvere problemi. L'ortografia della parola è stata poi influenzata nei paesi anglosassoni dalla parola engine (motore) ed infatti ingegnere in questi paesi si dice engineer. Il termine si è evoluto per includere tutti i campi in cui vengono utilizzate le abilità di applicazione del metodo scientifico.

Engineering is the discipline and profession whose objective is the application of knowledge and results of mathematical, physical and natural sciences to the resolution of problems that contribute to the satisfaction of human needs in society. Engineering, by applying technical standards, provides methodologies, projects and specifications for the design, construction and management of a more or less complex physical asset, product or service, and more generally for the development and control of an industrial process through an appropriate system. In this sense, engineering is an applied science closely linked to technology. The word comes from the Latin ingenium, the same root as the modern word ingenium. In the original meaning, an engineer was understood as an intelligent, practical man, capable of solving problems. The spelling of the word was then influenced in Anglo-Saxon countries by the word engine and in fact engineer in these countries is called engineer. The term has evolved to include all fields in which the skills of applying the scientific method are used.
